Sail like a girl 💫 Growing up as a female athlete has come with its own set of challenges. Being underestimated, facing fewer opportunities and feeling the pressure to prove my worth. Many girls quit sports as they grow older and become more aware of societal expectations. I really loved this campaign by Always that flipped the script on what it means to do something “like a girl”. So today, on International Women’s Day, I want to remind everyone that sailing, running, throwing or playing like a girl is something to be proud of. Another podium finish is always a great feeling, but this one felt a little different… Process vs. Outcome: The Regatta Mindset ⛵️ As a competitor, I’m always pushing for the best possible results. But sometimes, it’s crucial to zoom out and look at the process behind winning. Outcome Regatta 🏆: It’s all about the result - the podium, the ranking, the medal. We are solely focused on hitting our targets which can help fuel that competitive fire to send it! But when we’re too focused on just the outcome, we might miss the small wins that actually make us better. And if we don’t hit our goal? It can be easy to feel discouraged. Process Regatta 📈: This is where the real growth happens. Did I nail my start? Were my decisions on point? It’s not just about where we finish but every little move along the way that gets us there. These regattas are an opportunity to try new things that can make us better in the long run. Excellence isn’t built overnight, it’s about constant improvement so that when it really counts, we’re ready. As athletes, our natural competitiveness makes it hard to ignore the results, the competition and even the expectations around us. But one of the biggest skills to master is learning to use a regatta as an opportunity, not just to win, but to experiment and push outside our comfort zone for long-term growth. This event was a real learning curve for me and I’m proud of the steps I took to improve. And of course the podium finish was an added bonus! Why do so many sailors spend nearly as much time on the bike as they do on the water?? 🤷🏼‍♀️ A question I’ve been getting a lot lately!! So here’s my take on it… Fitness Gains 💪🏼: Grinding up hills on a bike feels really similar to hiking hard in an ILCA. It’s the perfect way to target the same muscle groups (legs and core) whilst keeping a solid training load and intensity even when I’m not sailing. Plus, watts don’t lie! A great way to track fitness progress objectively. Injury Prevention🦵🏼: Cycling is a low-impact way to build endurance without beating up my body. Switching things up also helps prevent overuse injuries and keeps me fresh for those long regatta days. Recovery Mode 🔄: Nothing flushes out the lactic acid from a hard day on the water like a spin on the bike. It’s also a great tool to help clear your mind after tricky racing days. Pure Fun 🤪: My love for cycling started during the COVID lockdowns when I rode just for the joy of it - no numbers, no goals, just adventure. Officially graduated from the University of Exeter this summer with a First Class degree in Psychology!!!!!! Pretty cool to get a full page in the Graduation brochure this year aswell 🤪🤪 So incredibly grateful to all of the people that have made it possible to balance my academics during an Olympic campaign. Au revoir Marseille 🥺🥺 We just wrapped up the final training camp in Marseille ahead of the Olympic Games. It’s crazy to think this has been home for me for the last 3 summers. I really have loved every minute and every inch of this place. Looking back on all the memories of Marseille it’s so cool to see the progression over the years. These hard hours spent on and off the water are starting to really pay off and I’m excited for what the new cycle has in store. Thank you to @hannahsnellgrovesailing for including me in your Olympic journey this summer. It’s been an amazing insight into the build up to the Games whilst training and competing against all the best girls in the world. 9th at the French Olympic Week!!!! Super happy to be back in a medal race this week off the back of Palma. Gutted it was too windy today to actually do the medal race 😅 It’s certainly been a long and cold week both on and off the water. A capsize in race 2 left me with a deep discard from the get go and kept me a bit too reserved on the start line this week. But I felt really happy with my speed and proud to finish the week with a race win!! That was probably the last major regatta for a while now with the Games fast approaching. Sad that the racing season is coming to a close but looking forward to making the most of some solid training in Marseille this summer. exciting new upgrade!!! 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️ The new Aluminium Bullseye Fairlead has been developed and tested by @southeast_sailboats and it has just been made class legal. Never thought I’d be so excited over a boat block but here we are 😅 I always find myself having to replace plastic fairleads to try and stop my kicker secondary line from wearing after only a week of sailing. I know many of my fellow competitors all face the same issue. A massive thank you to Max for coming up with a solution! He’s gone above and beyond to create and push for this upgrade. This small and easy fitting change will make a difference to sailing performance by maximising rigging performance. I really would recommend this to fellow ILCA sailors out there who have also found themselves frustrated by the wear and tear of their kicker line within days of replacing it!! Paris 2024 will be the first Olympic Games to achieve full gender parity 💙 I feel very proud to be part of my current squad and to have grown up with so many driven and determined women within my sport. We have all worked hard both on and off the water to be here. The support from friends, family and the British Sailing Team have helped make this dream come alive! There is still a long road ahead to improving the opportunities for women in sailing beyond the Olympics. 8th at the Vilamoura Grand Prix R2!! 💦💦 Happy to finish our final camp out in Vilamoura with a solid regatta with the majority of the top competitors there! It was a breezy week full of hiking which has been a massive work on for me recently so really chuffed to see the hard work paying off. A change of vessel this weekend!! ⛵️⛵️ Had a really fun time match racing in an Elliott this weekend with some of the @exetersailing girls! It was our first time in the boat and match racing so we learned loads together over the weekend. I was really happy to have gained some experience in a new discipline - it’s a great way to learn new skills that are actually very applicable for me back in the ILCA. It was also really cool to do an all Women’s Match Racing event and loved to see so many of us out there pushing each other. Thank you to everyone that made the weekend possible! Time to reflect on the year as 2022 comes to a close 💫💫 It’s been a year of ups and downs and plenty of learning! If you’d have told me in January that I would finish 4th at the European Championships I wouldn’t have believed you. I’m so proud of how I have developed as a sailor, athlete and student this year. None of this would have been possible without all the incredible support I get behind the scenes. A little reflection on the Europeans!! 🌊🌊 Felt super happy to be nominated by the British Sailing Team as the Breakthrough Regatta Performance of the year last week. It really was a special week for me. After feeling disappointed with my sailing at the Worlds I felt like I made the most of learning from those mistakes. The week was all about getting off the start line which for me is such a great improvement from last year where my success rate was not even 10% over a regatta! It was also so exciting to have @hannah_gbradial and @daisycollingridge up at the top too. We push each other hard in training and are constantly bouncing off each other to make improvements in our sailing. Thank you @james_gray_coach for helping us create such a great squad environment. Also a massive thank you to all those that support me throughout my campaign @southeast_sailboats @sailingfastuk @talentedathleteuk @integopro @energiseme_ @uoeperformancesport - none of it could be done without all the support behind the scenes. Finishing 4th at the Europeans this year has shown me the potential I can bring to the table in this sport. Finished up 24th at the Worlds this week 🤠 Feeling some mixed emotions about the week. Not quite the result I wanted but still saw some progress. I was super happy to bag a 3rd during finals racing in what’s got to be the toughest fleet I’ve ever raced in! It’s also definitely one of the most mentally challenging weeks I’ve sailed with 6 hour days to get all the racing in. Lots to learn from the week as always and great to just be getting more and more racing experience. Also nice that the Europeans are just around the corner to iron out some of the mistakes from this week 😅 Thank you as always to everyone for their amazing support!!
